American Royals by Katherine McGee & Cherry Tart Recipe!

I recently decided I am going to periodically share recipes for foods mentioned in the books I am reading! I am always drooling over the foods in the books I’m reading and this feels like a good way to get creative in the kitchen. In American Royals, there is mention of cherry tarts that the American commoners make to celebrate the royals, swipe to the second slide for a super easy recipe!

Yield: 4 Tarts

Tart Ingredients:

  • 1 pckg puff pastry dough (thawed in fridge)

  • 4 cups pitted fresh cherries

  • 3 TBS white sugar

  • 1.5 tsp cornstarch

  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)

Vanilla Glaze Ingredients:

  • 1/2 c powdered sugar

  • 2 tsp milk

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 F

  2. Mix the cherries, sugar, and cornstarch together

  3. Roll out the puff pastry square and cut into 4 sections

  4. Scoop a quarter of the cherry mixture onto the center of each piece of puff pastry

  5. Fold edges of dough in toward the center of each piece of puff pastry, forming a small bowl of cherries with the dough

  6. Place the 4 pastries on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes

  7. Mix glaze ingredients while the tarts are baking and drizzle on top of each once they are done baking!

  8. Serve and enjoy!

American Royals by Katherine McGee

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5

This book has been recommended to me for YEARS and I finally got around to reading it for my work book club. I enjoyed the creativity involved with creating a world where America has a monarchy and the multiple POV aspect is always a fave of mine as well. The pacing was a bit slow but had enough drama and intrigue to keep me consistently reading. I didn’t love the way the book ended which is why I gave it 3.5 stars instead of 4 but it did force me to start on book 2 (which I am currently reading) so perhaps it served it’s purpose. 😉

Content Rating: PG/PG-13 for some mild adult content

Book 1 Synopsis:

When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne. Like most royal families, the Washingtons have an heir and a spare. A future monarch and a backup battery. Each child knows exactly what is expected of them. But these aren't just any royals. They're American.

As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America's first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she's breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn't care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her. And then there's Samantha's twin, Prince Jefferson. If he'd been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart.
