Did you know researchers have found that language is processed by the same way by the brain, whether you listen or read with your eyes? (The Journal of Neuroscience)
I have a lot of friends who “don’t have time to read” or who “just can’t do audiobooks” so I wanted to share some info that will hopefully encourage you to try them out!
Look, I didn’t like audiobooks AT ALL a couple years ago. I thought audiobooks were boring and slow and I was convinced I was exclusively a visual learner and could never enjoy audiobooks. But I decided to give them another try to help meet my Goodreads goals and now I am fully hooked.
Here are a few tips that may help you dabble in the audio book world!
Start with free audiobooks on Libby so you can try out books with no commitment.
Adjust the speed of your audiobook. Around 1.35x is my sweet spot but I have friends who listen up to 2x the normal speed.
Start with a memoir read by the author. It feels more like a podcast or TV show than an audio book.
Thrillers are another excellent choice for audiobooks. The fast pace of the plot keeps you engaged with the audio.
Try out an audio book during a mindless chore or walk!
Whatever you do, do NOT start with a complex fantasy or character driven literature. These can be hard to follow and overwhelming and will definitely not convince you to love audiobooks if you don't already.
To get you started, here are some of my favorite books that work very well on audio!
Thrillers:
The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager
Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris
One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus
The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
Memoirs:
Troublemaker by Leah Remini
Open Book by Jessica Simpson
Breaking Free by Rachel Jeffs
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
